What is it?
The City of Cape Town Open Data Portal publishes data related to City resources, services, geography and governance.
- Over 120 datasets
- Popular datasets are water consumption and tender awards
- Recent datasets for business licenses, city buildings, health districts
- Direct download, no login needed
Why is it Important?
Many South Africans see their local government or municipality as the primary government interface for shaping how they work and live. The City of Cape Town Open Data Portal gives citizens an access point to data that affects their everyday lives.
How can it be accessed and used?
The portal content is accessed via the home page, and there are two basic filters for content: by file format and by subject area. From there, available datasets can be downloaded directly from the filtered results. Remember that for spatial data files you can use the open source QGIS or online tools like Kepler.gl and Mapshaper to convert and view these datasets.
Note that there is a beta-version of the portal in development, oriented to spatial data viewing.
A number of important data-based applications have also been highlighted on the portal such as the Economic Areas Management Programme (ECAMP) Business Location Intelligence site.
