National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS)

Theme: People Date Added: 2018-11-19

What is it?

NIDS is a multi-year study started in 2008 to track and understand changes in poverty and well-being amongst a sample of individuals in households across the country.

Key Points

  • Track changes in livelihoods and poverty
  • 28,000 individuals in 7,300 households
  • Repeat study every 2 years with same households
  • Micro-data available through Datafirst

Why is it Important?

NIDS provides insights into changes in people's living circumstances over multiple years, across the country. This is critical for understanding how individuals and households exit poverty, what the impact of interventions is (such as social grants) and how people fall into and become trapped in poverty.

How can it be accessed and used?

A good starting point is to read through one or two of the publications on the NIDS website to get a sense of how the data is used or watch one of the animations on the Youtube channel.

Then you may want to explore some of the micro-data which is hosted by Datafirst zaf-saldru-nids-2014-2015-v1.1. The data is grouped into study waves which take place every 2 years. Respondents or participants in the study can be followed across waves using their unique identifier. The NIDS website provides detailed information on how to do this.
